"Day come white, Night come black
You could wait forever to get this loneliness off your back
Even the moon waits for another sun
To shine a light shine a light on everyone
You can run, You can hide
You can die of thirst by the river side
Love waits for you on the blue river
Roll on deep waters come to quench the great desire
Past the rich man's factory, past the poor man's pride
Lay down your burdens Every fear and tear you cried
Take my hand and leave this land that has left you high and
dry"
Blue River by Peter Mayer and Vince Varvel
I think this song of Peter's is his theological version of
"you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." In
other words, there are limits to what one can do in terms of effectiveness. I
believe it is helpful to reflect on being responsible to people and not
necessarily responsible for them or for their behavior. I am also aware that
there are times when people's bodies crave water and need hydration, but they
are simply unable to drink more water. Or there are those times when one can be
right next to water, but simply not be aware of its life-renewing abilities.
"On the last day of the festival, the great day, while
Jesus was standing there, he cried out, 'Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,
38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said,
"Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"
(John 7:37-38)
Jesus makes quite a promise in this Bible passage. He
literally says that if you are thirsty, come to me and you will become a
thirst-quencher. Isn't that amazing? People who know what it means to be
dehydrated / thirsty are transformed to being liquid and part of the delivery
system of Living Water.
In other words, out of a need comes a blessing. Enjoy
the rest of Peter's song and let it flow.....
"You can run, You can hide
You can die of thirst by the river side
Don't leave me out on the blue river
You can run, You can hide
You can live your life by what's denied, now
Don't leave me waiting on the blue river
Save your strength for the good fight
Save your tears for the sorrow
Spend you love it's alright
Before it's gone gone gone tomorrow
For the day will come when you leave this dusty town
And your cross will take its place by your father's in the ground
Love is not just a fable that Hollywood bought and sold
Oh, let me tell you now love is the only road"
Flow h2o,
