"Only You can break down the walls that hide me away
Only You can turn the night into day
Only You can stop the darkness from overtaking me
Created the land the sky and sea
I know it in my heart to be true
The answer to me is only You"
Only You by Peter Mayer and Jim Mayer
It is very natural when one has been hurt or abused to build up walls, literally and figuratively. For nobody wants to be hurt or deserves to be hurt. Constructing a wall seems to be the "wise" thing to do. Vulnerability is risky business. And yet, so is wall-making. For it is quite possible that while one thinks that the wall may promote and increase protection, it could also have unintended consequences like rejection of relationships and subjection of feelings and emotions.
Peter sings,
"Only You can break down the walls that hide me away."
The author of the letter to the Ephesians wrote,
"For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us." (Ephesians 2). So what that means is Jesus is in the construction business (of building us up) and also in the demolition business of breaking down the walls that divide and separate us.
Peter sings,
"We build the walls of strength deep inside us
They must not divide us, become our prison
We bring our differences, our hopes our faith our fears
For the light that brought us here"
"By faith the walls of Jericho fell after they had been encircled for seven days".(Hebrews 11:30)
You might want to pray today about some of the walls which you feel and see in your life. Perhaps they've been in place for quite some time. Maybe you inherited them and you've only patched and repaired cracks or holes in the wall. Let Christ help you envision a time when the bricks and stones of those walls can be taken down and recycled into BBQ pits, or borders of gardens or fashioned into fish ponds.
It can happen .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
Peace,
rtg
